We are now up to 400 people who are being charged for their violent attack on our country’s capitol. Many will be doing major time in prison. Some of them belong to white supremacist militia groups, who had been planning this insurrection for months, and some are just rabid Trump-followers who were doing their master’s bidding. They all have one thing in common; they were there because they believed Donald Trump’s lies.
Trump’s biggest lie, that he won the election by a landslide, but the win was stolen from him by massive voter fraud, was deliberately echoed by right-wing media and by top GOP congress-critters, especially Hawley and Cruz.
Now a bunch of people will be going to prison for believing the lie and acting on it, but the liar himself, and all those GOP sycophants who supported the lie, face no consequences whatsoever. Trump has retired to Mar-a-Lago to scheme his evil schemes, and the GOP congress-critters are getting on with their agenda of obstructing whatever the democrats try to do. Hawley and Cruz are dreaming big, thinking they’re going to tap into Trump’s malignant base to propel themselves into the white house in 2024.
How in all the hells did we end up with a government that operates like this? In other countries, when a violent coup is thwarted, its leader goes to prison, at the very least. Are we really just going to shrug this off and let bygones be bygone? Is this who we are now?
